John Martel Hughes

Former physician superintendent St Cadoc's Hospital, Newport (b 1923; q University of Wales 1946; BSc, FRCP, FRCPsych), d 26 May 2005. John transformed St Cadoc's Hospital and the mental health service by putting many progressive and forward thinking ideas into practice. He unlocked wards and improved the hospital environment with the help of interior designers. He set up a community nursing service and group homes, allowing many people to leave hospital after years of inpatient treatment. John was a founder member of the Welsh Psychiatric Society and chairman of the local branch of the BMA. He leaves a wife, Sally; six children; and eight grandchildren.
