Fundraising efforts for the fight against H5N1 avian influenza have exceeded all expectations, as $1.9bn (£1.1bn; €1.5bn) was put on the table at a funding conference in Beijing last week.
“I was expecting $1.5bn, so $1.9bn came as a surprise,” said David Nabarro, the senior United Nations system coordinator for avian and human influenza.
“I'm particularly pleased that we got pledges of $1bn in grants and $0.9bn in low interest loans. The other advantage of a higher figure is that we may have capacity for flexible funding for the unexpected, as the $1.5bn budget was still very tight,” he added. …
