Dermott started his career as a medical officer with the Colonial Service in the Gold Coast (now Ghana), where he worked for 10 years, setting up field hospitals and providing health services that covered a large territory. Returning to England in 1952 he settled in general practice in Warwick, where he worked until 1976. He then joined the Foreign Office as medical officer to the British High Commission in Delhi; this was followed by a stint with the High Commission in Moscow. Predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth, he leaves a son.
