Alan Hutchinson Fairlamb
Consultant community physician Kingston upon Thames 1968-81 (b Dudley,
Northumberland, 1918; q Durham 1940; DPH, AFOM), died from ischaemic heart
disease on 14 July 2005.
After junior appointments in Newcastle upon Tyne Alan joined the Royal
Air Force Volunteer Reserve, serving in Canada and Britain, and was mentioned
in dispatches. His medical career in public health took him from Newcastle
upon Tyne to Derby, and Kingston upon Hull, where he was part of the team
that successfully dealt with the outbreaks of poliomyelitis in 1961 and smallpox
in 1962. He was immensely proud of the Galen Day Care Centre for people with
Down’s syndrome, which was the first such to recognise their skills and abilities,
allowing them to enter the workforce and play a full role in society. In
1968 he took up his post in Kingston upon Thames. After retirement he moved
back to the north east, where he continued to indulge his passion for fine
porcelain, antique silver, and furniture. He leaves Margaret, his wife of
over 60 years; three sons (two of whom are doctors); nine grandchildren;
and one great granddaughter. [David Fairlamb]
