At various stages in his career he was employed by the European Union, GTZ, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, and later the Health Protection Agency as a consultant in communicable disease control. Bernard had considerable knowledge, expertise, and experience in health protection, especially in epidemiology. Bernard’s expertise in epidemiology was acknowledged by both academic and service colleagues who worked closely with him over a number of years. This, along with his gentleness and humour, enabled him to develop and lead effectively a surveillance programme for the Cheshire and Merseyside Health Protection Unit. He retired in March 2004 owing to ill health. His great loves outside medicine were his family and sailing.
