Former coroner west London and the Queen's household (b Watford 1929; q University College Hospital, London, 1952; CBE, MVO, FFARCS), died from prostate cancer on 8 December 2004.
John Burton held hospital posts in surgery and anaesthetics before reading for the bar, where he practised for four years, ceasing on appointment as coroner for west London in 1968. As the secretary of the Coroners' Society for 23 years he was active in its relationships with local and national government organisations and he had an interest in organisations concerned with sudden infant and adult death of no obvious cause. He was coroner to the royal household from 1986 to 2002. He leaves a wife, Rosemary, his deputy coroner for 34 years; two children; and four grandchildren.
