Harold Bernard Watson
Former consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist Solihull and East Birmingham
hospitals and honorary senior clinical lecturer University of Birmingham
(b Birmingham 1917; q Birmingham 1940; FRCS, FRCOG), died from Parkinson’s
disease on 28 December 2004.
After house jobs in Birmingham Harold Watson was posted to Solihull in
1941, where he worked in both general surgery and then obstetrics and gynaecology.
After marrying his medical secretary, Barbara, he stayed to serve the people
of Solihull for more than 50 years. He worked tirelessly to develop the facilities
at Solihull Hospital and was delighted when a new obstetric unit opened in
1972, where he delivered his first grandson, the first Christmas baby. His
work in promoting local services was recognised by a BMA certificate of commendation.
After retirement he continued in practice and established a successful fertility
programme based at Solihull Parkway Hospital. After the death of his first
wife he married Joan, who survives him; he also leaves two daughters and
