Health assembly adopts new regulations for tackling emergencies

    New regulations for managing public health emergencies of international concern, such as outbreaks of avian flu, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), polio, and Marburg haemorrhagic fever, were unanimously agreed this week by the World Health Assembly.

    These new rules replace the current regulations, which were adopted in 1969 and which are out of date. The old regulations were designed to combat six infectious diseases: cholera, smallpox, yellow fever, typhus, plague, and relapsing fever.
