Chakanambarth Mutteriyil Gopinath
Former general practitioner Harlow, Essex (b 1949; q India 1973; MSc Orthop
RNOH 1990), died from a brain tumour on 6 November 2004.
Gopi trained at Kasturba Medical College, south India, and completed a
diploma in orthopaedics 1975. After working as the district medical officer
for Indian Southern Railways, he came to Britain in September 1979. After
training jobs in Royal United, Whiston, Walton, and Eastbourne hospitals,
he worked as a registrar in orthopaedics at Bedford Hospital for six years
and completed an MSc in orthopaedics from the Royal National Orthopaedic
Hospital, Stanmore. He then changed career to general practice, completing
his training in St Neots. He became a principal in general practice in Harlow,
Essex, in 1997. A caring GP with interests in music, cricket, and travelling,
he was well known among his peers, especially for his sense of humour and
vibrant personality. He leaves his wife, Shashi; a son, Praveen; and a daughter,
