James studied dentistry before medicine. Once earning as a dentist he purchased a vintage Rolls-Royce and then put himself through medical school. James was attracted by the growing specialty of radiology and his surgical leanings quickly led him into the new and exciting branch of intervention, a field in which he became one of the eminent UK pioneers. He made rapid progress in his radiological career, culminating in his appointment as director of the Charing Cross department; he also headed the radiological service at the Eastman Dental Institute in recognition of his dental skills. In addition to these NHS appointments he participated in a Harley Street practice. He leaves two children.
