Monnica Charlotte Stewart
Former principal medical officer (adult health) Basingstoke and North
Hants (b 1924; q Durham 1950; DObst RCOG), died from cardiac failure on 14
October 2004 in London a few hours before her brother, Dr Alexander Bryce
Stewart.
Held staff positions at Newcastle Infirmary; Farnborough Hospital, Kent;
and St Mary’s, Newport, Isle of Wight, working in obstetrics. Changed direction
to geriatrics when appointed assistant physician at Edgware General Hospital.
Worked for Newham Borough within community medicine and was later appointed
principal medical officer for Basingstoke and North Hants. Published My
Brother’s Keeper in 1968, which anticipated and highlighted future problems
for geriatric medicine and home care support. Retired in 1989 but remained
active within the medical world as chairman of Living Options Group of the
Prince of Wales Advisory Group on Disability; trustee and vice chairman of
Disabled Living Foundation; founder member of Association for Continence
Advice and the Continence Foundation; and active member of Reading and West
Berkshire Motor Neurone Disease Association. [Stewart Munday]
