After house posts in London George was appointed deputy medical officer of health and port medical officer of health in Southampton. At the outbreak of the second world war he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps and served in the Middle East, Greece, and Germany. He was deputy medical officer of health in Ealing before being appointed medical officer of health in Mid-Hertfordshire, where he dealt with polio epidemics, influenza, and drug addiction. He had a lifelong interest in early English porcelain and antique coins. Predeceased by his wife, Sylvia, he leaves two children and two grandchildren.
