Matthew Macmaster Garrey
Former obstetrician and gynaecologist Glasgow (b Ayr 1914; q Glasgow with
commendation 1936; DPH 1940, FRCOG 1963, FRCS Glas 1973), d 4 October 2004.
Matthew was the consummate obstetrician, an expert in difficult vaginal
delivery before caesarean section became as popular and safe as it is today.
Medicine was his vocation, not "a job." He was interested in boats and was
a founder member of the Clyde River Steamer Club. After retirement he was
for 10 years a guide at the famous Burrell Collection, where his particular
interest was the stained glass and the stories that they told. He was a staunch
supporter of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and
wrote articles for the college journal on as varied subjects as Streets in
Glasgow, Highland Mary, and Sir WaIter Scott.
He leaves a wife, Margery, to whom he had been married for 60 years; four
children, one a gynaecologist in Vancouver; and nine grandchildren. [Malcolm
