Giant of otolaryngology, who had a second career as a medieval historian

Philip Stell had an outstanding career in laryngology and head and neck surgery, and, following early retirement through ill health, became an acclaimed medieval historian.

Appointed senior lecturer and consultant in otolaryngology in Liverpool, he confined his practice to the discipline of laryngology and head and neck surgery, the first to do so in the United Kingdom. He was appointed to a chair in Liverpool in 1979.
