It is remarkable that Osler, Cushing, Charcot, Billroth, and the other giants of medicine were able to do their work without a mission statement. They must have had concepts regarding their role that would be called “vision” in contemporary parlance, but did not find it necessary to print the text and hang framed copies in their hospital corridors.
