Richard Charles Harrington
Professor of child and adolescent psychiatry University of Manchester (b 1956; q Birmingham 1980), d 22 May 2004.Richard Harrington died suddenly from postoperative complications after major surgery. He read medicine at Birmingham Medical School, qualified in 1980, and studied psychiatry at the Maudsley Hospital, followed by a research post at the Institute of Psychiatry, where he began his major research investigations into aspects of children and adolescents with depressive illness.
He became senior lecturer in Birmingham for two years and, in 1993, was appointed professor of child and adolescent psychiatry at Manchester University. For the next 10 years he established one of the most active and productive child and adolescent psychiatry research groups worldwide. He was an inspirational leader and contributed immensely to the running of the School of Psychiatry in Manchester—his humour and positive outlook invariably bringing life to turgid committees. He increased the standing of child psychiatry in the undergraduate curriculum.
He became chairman of the British Child Psychiatry Research Society and secretary and vice president of the European Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. He served on scientific committees at the Wellcome Trust, the Health Foundation, and the Department of Health. He published 150 articles and authored three books. His scientific contribution was recognised by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, who in 1998 presented him with the Nathan Cummings Foundation award for best original research in the field of depression in young people. He is survived by his wife, Lesley, and their three children. [Ian Goodyear, Alistair Burns]
