Hubert Cedric Burnell
Former general practitioner Wednesbury, West Midlands (b Bangor, north Wales, 1917; q University of Birmingham 1941), died from coronary artery disease on 13 May 2003.
After qualifying he was immediately drafted into the army, serving in north Africa and Italy during the second world war.
He returned to the Birmingham area, where he did a couple of hospital jobs before taking up general practice in Wednesbury in 1947. Here he worked incredibly hard, not only taking a full part in this extremely busy practice but also looking after the local maternity home.
Having retired from general practice in 1977, he kept up his interest in medicine by working part time as a medical assessor for the Department of Health and Social Security. The rest of his time was occupied with his vast array of interests ranging from gardening and ornithology to water colour painting and learning to speak Welsh. He was determined to become computer literate and achieved basic computer skills without outside help.
He was a very modest, unassuming, and uncomplaining man, and had an excellent sense of humour. He retained an encyclopaedic knowledge right up to his sudden death, his health having been marred only by some physical frailty.
He is survived by his wife, Margaret; three sons;and eight grandchildren. [J C Burnell]
