The government was under intense pressure to abandon its plans for NHS foundation hospitals as the BMJ went to press on the eve of a House of Commons vote.
The House of Lords voted on 6 November to remove all provisions concerning foundation hospitals from the Health and Social Care Bill, but ministers were anxious to see them reinstated. The vote was due to take place in the House of Commons on Wednesday. The bill has to be passed before parliament …
