Harry Ian Lockett
Former county medical officer Nottinghamshire County Council and area medical
officer Nottinghamshire Area Health Authority (b Gillingham, Kent, 1929;
q St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, 1952; DObst RCOG, DPH, FFCMI, FFCM),
died from a small bowel infarct on 16 June 2003.
After a successful career in public health, Harry seized the opportunity
presented by yet another reorganisation to take early retirement and pursue
his interest in alternative medicine. He studied and practised both homoeopathy
and acupuncture, spending some time in China furthering his knowledge of
the latter technique. Unfortunately his recent years were darkened by disability,
which he bore with fortitude and quite remarkable good humour. His friends
and colleagues will remember him as a man of wit and sympathy. Apart from
his professional interests, which he pursued with insight and learning,
he was an expert in medieval armour and edge weapons, and had amassed a
considerable collection of these artefacts. He leaves a wife, Liz; five
children from a previous marriage; and six grandchildren. [Thelma Phelps,
