Jack was a general practitioner in Stockport from 1948 to 1965. He served as secretary and chairman of Stockport BMA division and later was president of the South Lancashire and East Cheshire branch. In 1965 he left general practice to join the regional medical service, where he worked full time until 1987 and then part time until 1993. Jack's interests included antiques and Egyptology. After retirement he took an MA in Anglo-Saxon studies. He leaves a wife, Judy, and two children.
