Screening for bowel cancer should be added to current cancer screening programmes, says the charity Cancer Research UK.
The charity has submitted evidence to the government to show the effectiveness of screening in the detection of bowel cancer and is urging that such a scheme be introduced. If its proposal was accepted an estimated 5000 lives a year would be saved, in addition to the 300 now saved through breast cancer screening and 1300 through cervical cancer screening, the charity said.
