- Beatrice Elizabeth Sleigh
Former consultant anaesthetist Dartford Group of Hospitals (b 1925; q Manchester 1948; FFARCS, DA), died from carcinoma of the stomach on 7 June 2003.Betty was educated at Penrhos College. During the second world war she was evacuated along with 250 girls and 36 staff to Chatsworth, the home of the duke and duchess of Devonshire. She attended the University of Manchester, initially to study languages, but she soon switched to medicine.
After qualifying, Betty did her house jobs at the Leicester Royal Infirmary and then went to Boston, Massachusetts. Later, she worked at the Shaughnessy Hospital (now no more) in Vancouver before returning to the United Kingdom as a registrar at the Frenchay Hospital. After taking the primary FRCS, she finally settled for anaesthetics.
Betty was appointed consultant anaesthetist for the Dartford (Kent) Group in 1959, subsequently taking charge of the department. Although very forthright, she was highly respected for her skills.
She remained at Dartford until her retirement in 1985 and then she was able to follow her hobbies—art, music, golf, travel, and bird watching, especially in Africa. Betty remained fiercely independent in her long illness until a few days before her death. [Joan Mitchell]
