A man without qualifications worked for 18 months as a senior clinical scientist before being found guilty of defrauding the NHS of £59 000. He used a bogus PhD in philosophy to obtain the job. He's been sentenced to 120 hours of community service and been ordered to pay court costs. Minerva is curious about what he actually did at work, because his actions apparently did not affect any patients at the trust that employed him.
During her inpatient stay, this woman developed a painful, unilateral erythematous rash in a butterfly distribution. It predominantly affected the right malar region. Initial differential diagnoses included herpes zoster and systemic lupus erythematosis, but it became clear that this was photosensitivity induced by oral doxycycline. Her bed was situated so that the sun shone on to one side of her face for most of the day. After the antibiotic was stopped and the curtains were drawn, the rash resolved rapidly.
