Michael John Garrett
Former consultant radiotherapist Liverpool Regional Radiotherapy Centre
(b Galway 1924; q National University of Ireland, Galway, 1947; MD, FRCR,
FFR RCSI, DMRT), d 10 February 2003.
Michael left Ireland to train in radiotherapy at the Christie Holt Radium
Institute in Manchester. After posts in Newcastle and Liverpool he was
appointed consultant to the Liverpool Regional Radiotherapy Service, later
becoming director. His talent for concise communication led to frequent
lectures and extensive publication on lymphoma and techniques in radiotherapy.
He was an examiner for the final fellowship in both England and Ireland.
He had played rugby and rowed in his youth and he took up golf in middle
age, becoming club captain. Michael died from small vessel stroke disease
after a protracted illness. He is survived by his wife, Martina, whom he
met as a fellow medical student, and their four children, all doctors.
