BMA calls on consultants to challenge long hours of work

    The BMA is issuing consultants in England with guidelines on how they can challenge their managers over long working hours and claim additional payment for extra time worked, as part of the ongoing campaign to resist proposed changes to their contract.

    The association suggests that consultants who regularly work beyond their job plan should ask for a review of their plan, which they should support with a detailed diary showing their NHS work commitment. This should include work done out of hours, emergency work, administrative duties, and teaching and research commitments.
