Former consultant urologist Guy's Hospital, London (b Alexandria, Egypt, 1922; q Cambridge 1945; MS, FRCS), d 22 December 2002.
Hugh was one of the outstanding urologists of his generation, with a particular interest in paediatric urology. At a time when most urology was done by general surgeons he helped establish urology as a separate specialty and set the standards for training and practice. He was an inspirational leader and teacher as well as a first class technical practitioner of urological surgery. He also had wide interests outside medicine, which made him an interesting and amusing companion. He leaves a wife, Audrey, and five children.
