A Dutch nurse has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of murdering four patients and attempting to murder three others. All were children or elderly women and all were patients at three hospitals in The Hague where she worked from 1997 to 2001.
In every case Lucy de Berk, had been responsible for their care and medication or was the last person present before they died or became ill. But there were no direct witnesses and the prosecution had to rely on indirect evidence.
