TB epidemic is still growing in Africa and in eastern Europe

Tremendous progress has been made in combating tuberculosis, Dr Jong Wook Lee, director general designate of the World Health Organization, said this week. Ten million people have now been successfully treated with the “directly observed treatment, short course” (DOTS) multidrug programme of treatment. But HIV infection, population growth, poverty, and migration could undermine this success.
