Health authorities face big payouts after ombudsman's ruling

    Thousands of patients needing long term care could win compensation after a report by the health service ombudsman found that patients and their families had been wrongly forced to pay for their care.

    The ombudsman, Ann Abraham, said health authorities should look at all cases since 1996 and review the criteria used since then to determine whether patients were eligible for funding. She said that authorities should “make efforts to remedy any consequent financial injustice to patients” if these criteria were applied wrongly.
