Ronald ("Ronnie") Shaw
Former consultant anaesthetist Warwick and Leamington Spa Hospitals (b Oldham, Lancashire, 1 August 1912; q St John’s College, Cambridge/St Mary’s Hospital, London, 1937; MA, DA), died after years of ill health on 30 March 2002.
Walking miles daily across the moors to school, Ronnie continued his education at Sedbergh School. After qualifying at St Mary’s he worked as a general practitioner in Devon; war broke out and he was posted to No 3 Maxillo Facial Unit in Ranikhet, India, where he learned Hindi and delighted in the 5000 ft high Hill Station. From there he went to No 2 Mobile Neurosurgical Unit at Dimapur, treating casualties from Kohima and the Burmese theatre of operations. He was noted for his successful improvisations in the field in Burma, where the facilities were entirely dependent on air drops and mule transport.
After demobilisation and a period as a general practitioner in Leamington Spa he gained his FFARCS in 1954 and joined the Warwick and Warneford Hospital staff as a consultant anaesthetist until his retirement. They often spoke of his competence and gentle manner and many of his students remained in contact for years.
He was a keen water polo player from his time at St Mary’s (Alexander Fleming was the polo secretary) through to captaining a team in Leamington Spa. Ronnie also loved, and regularly played, real tennis and was an enthusiastic yachtsman. He enlivened parties with the accordion and proficient ragtime piano playing. He leaves a very devoted wife, Margaret; three children; and three grandchildren. [Tim and Jon Shaw, Gillian Cotter-Shaw]
