Effective organisations, argue David Pendleton and Jennifer King, have strong values (p 1352). Successful leaders help organisations articulate their values and live by them. These two thoughts are very important in the context of the National Health Service, which has flourished because of its strong values but is now experiencing a crisis—partly through clashes over values and lack of leadership.
