Ophthalmology is a highly visual subject and lends itself well to using static images as part of an educational process. Eyeatlas (http://www.eyeatlas.com/) is a simple but effective site, which has a neat collection of online pictures. It uses a frame based layout, with the contents list on the left and images on the right. There is no explanatory text, just a hypertext description of the image.
