Former consultant geriatrician Newsham General and Broadgreen Hospitals, Liverpool (b Cork 1922; q Cork 1946), died on 8 July 2002 from heart failure and pneumonia in the late aftermath of apparently successfully treated gastric cancer.

Although Cyril Shanahan's career flourished in the traditional “custodial” environment of Newsham, he brought to the care of his patients there and their relatives a quality of kindness and compassion far ahead of his time. This spilled over abundantly into his dealings with his colleagues. He was particularly proud of the lasting bridges that he built between his service and orthopaedic surgery at Broadgreen. He leaves a wife, Iris; and four children.
