College tells tobacco company to take its money elsewhere

    British American Tobacco has admitted that it was a mistake to offer funding for an MSc post to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

    A human resources employee at the cigarette firm had emailed a number of people at the school, including David Leon, professor of epidemiology, to offer an MSc student a £1500 ($2350; £2400) grant. The offer included the opportunity to work in the company's research and development unit at its Southampton factory on completion of the degree.

    But a spokeswoman for the company told the BMJ: “In hindsight …
