During his 35 years with the West Granton Medical Group, Alan played a key role in its development into one of Edinburgh's largest group practices. Under the leadership of the late Ekke Kuenssberg, the practice was in the van of the renaissance of British general practice with pioneering initiatives in the field of the “practice team” and practice management. Alan was a founder member of the College of General Practitioners. His garden was well known—particularly for its rhododendrons, of which it contained more than 100 different species. He leaves a wife, Anne; and two children.
