    After serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps in the second world war, Ralph Thomson joined the staff of Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1947, and in the early 1950s he and George Aitken developed cardiac catheterisation there. Over the next three decades Ralph trained many junior doctors in the practicalities of haemodynamic investigation. In retirement he took an interest in photography. Predeceased by his wife, Elspeth, he leaves a daughter and a grandson.
