A pacifist, John served in the Friends' Ambulance Unit towards the end of the second world war. After house jobs, he entered general practice in Bloxwich. An interest in psychiatry led to a clinical assistantship and later to a sabbatical year in Hamburg and Vienna. In 1960 his strength as a swimmer enabled him to assist in the rescue of two people in danger of drowning off the Cornish coast. He leaves a wife, Marianne; two children; and two grandchildren.
