    The comment arched obliquely across the discussion and slightly winded me with its weight of unspoken assumptions: “Of course, nurses are not doctors' handmaidens, you know.” I blinked and spluttered a little as the nursing manager eyed me with a certainty born of our four minute acquaintance.
