First NHS patients go to France for treatment: Nine English patients had operations for joint replacements and cataracts at the La Louviàre clinic in Lille, northern France, at the weekend. They were the first patients to go abroad under the government's new policy of sending patients to European or private hospitals if they face an unacceptable wait in England (15 December, p 1385).
