On graduation from Glasgow University with degrees in biochemistry and medicine, Iain Boyle trained in general medicine and endocrinology at Glasgow Royal Infirmary and then took up a research post at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School. From 1970 to 1972, he worked on calcium and vitamin D metabolism in the laboratory of Professor Hector DeLuca at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where his insight into the role of the kidney in vitamin D metabolism proved fundamental. His professional career centred on the university department of medicine at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he rose to be reader. He was also medical adviser to the student health service at Strathclyde University, where he became visiting professor in the department of pharmacology and physiology in 1994. He was very proud of the DSc awarded to him by Strathclyde University in 2000.
He was active in the affairs of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, where he was councillor, chairman of the symposium committee, vice president (medical), and latterly honorary librarian, a post he held with great distinction from 1994 until his death.
A man of considerable intellectual ability and many talents, his interests were philately and postal and social history. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, his three children (two of whom are doctors), and seven grandchildren. He died peacefully at home in the presence of his family.
