A new report prepared for the Lisbon based European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction estimates that between 180 000 and 600 000 drug users pass through prisons in the European Union every year.
The study is the first of its kind to try to establish a clear picture of the scale of illicit drug use among the 350 000 people in prisons in Europe on any one day and to examine prevention and treatment practices being used in the 15 member states.
