Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users
to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response
is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual
response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the
browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published
online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed.
Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles.
The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being
wilfully misrepresented as published articles or when it is brought to our
attention that a response spreads misinformation.
From March 2022, the word limit for rapid responses will be 600 words not
including references and author details. We will no longer post responses
that exceed this limit.
The word limit for letters selected from posted responses remains 300 words.
sirs ,for many years ( 4 decades) american doctors were told by
gov't. , patients , the legal system , and the media that malpractice was
a function of greed .since ours was the only proprietary system , and u.s.
m.d.s weren't gov't. employees but in medicine to make as much money as
they could .now there are gov't. studies showing most malpractice occurs
in hospitals , and not all the fault of m.d.s , but often nurses , aids ,
pharmacists etc.to add to this hmos have cut payment so that salaries are
so low that we can no longer attract good students into the field.however
, in spite of this m.d.s malpractice costs are skyrocketing .we are now
told it would be a good idea to have some kind of tort reform of our legal
system .since our legislators are lawyers ,our judges are lawyers ( as
evidenced by our supreme court ajudification of our presidential election
, just as biased as anyone else ) and tort system reform would hurt trial
lawyers - nothing changes .the statement becomes yes there is greed but
