Doctors question new test for Down's syndrome

Scientists and doctors have questioned the validity of a claim by a Hong Kong research team that it has developed a non- invasive diagnostic test for Down's syndrome.
The scientists in Hong Kong said that they used a technique called fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) to detect Down's syndrome from fetal DNA found in maternal plasma. The preliminary results of their small study of just 10 women was published in the Lancet last week (2000;356:1819-20).
