The general public has been told that that there is no evidence for
the transmission of vCJD during human blood transfusions following the
demonstration of BSE infection during whole blood transfusion in sheep.1
Although these statements by the UK Department of Health and the
National Blood Service of England may be based on a sound scientific
basis, the population at large finds it difficult to be reassured. This is
probably due to a number of factors, including previous reassurances that
have been retracted, qualifications associated with the reassurances that
have been given, and the perception that vCJD appears similar to other
highly infectious blood-borne diseases including HIV infection. Many of
these misconceptions can only be corrected with extensive education
concerning the differences between these illnesses.
If reassurances are to be accepted then considerable effort is needed
to educate those without a medical background about the causes and methods
of transmission of disease. The public must also be involved in the
decisions that are made concerning food production, labelling and
distribution.

Re: More effort is needed to reassure the public
I was interested in Dr Thornett's response. If the USA, Canada and
NZ have deferred donors and Australia is considering it, how do you
convince the folk in the UK that they are safe.
