Tougher ethical guidelines are needed when rich countries support or carry out research in developing countries, says a discussion paper published by the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.
The council drew up the document in response to criticism of trials of zidovudine given to HIV positive pregnant women to prevent transmission of infection to the baby.
