England's new health secretary, Alan Milburn, has announced that £50m ($80m) will be targeted to pay for 3000 extra heart operations in England over the next two years—a 10% increase—and that there will be a further 400 specialist cardiologists by 2005.
The minister insisted that the initiative was not a change in strategy and that the government would continue to cut numbers on waiting lists and stick to its pledge to bring them down by 100000.
