  • Choosing which of the UK's 24 medical schools to attend can be a daunting prospect, at least, if you want to make any kind of rational decision. One way to cut down the uncertainty is to get hold of the recently published Insiders” guide to medical schools, compiled by the BMA's medical student committee. Naturally there are details about each course's organisation and admission procedure, as well as descriptions of the wider context in which the school is set. Comparative information about library services, union facilities, and accommodation will be helpful not only to prospective applicants but also to the the schools themselves as they attempt to improve quality. Sometimes idiosyncratic (is it really a bad thing that Sheffield is “hilly” or that Edinburgh is “cold and windy in winter”?) it has the ring of authenticity of the alternative prospectus.
