The NHS Executive Equal Opportunities Unit has set new targets designed to rid the service of racism and harassment. The majority of black and Asian nursing staff have experienced “ethnic difficulties” with patients, and around one third with colleagues. The figures for doctors from ethnic minorities are not mentioned in the documentation of the new initiative, but they are unlikely to be zero. The programme director for managing the campaign is Mike Collins (tel 0121 456 5600). He will be overseeing a programme of awareness raising, training and support designed to stamp out harassment.
