Consultants will be able to nominate themselves for a distinction award from 1999, though the regional awards committee that they will have to impress (composed of A and A+ award holders) will also continue to scour the NHS for future holders. The total pot of £92m is distributed amongst those who have achieved professional excellence in research, innovation, teaching, audit, and other service goals.
