Empirical evidence about doctors' careers is in short supply, though see p. 1425-31 of the main journal this week. The Association for Medical Education (http://www.asme.org.uk/) is running a one day conference titled Making career choices-based on evidence in London on 4 December 1998, with the aim of helping the clinical tutors and educational supervisors who provide career advice to be more knowledgeable and skilful. The meeting will also debate the virtues of combining the senior house officer and specialist registrar grades. Phone 0131 225 9111 or email for details.
